Waterfront Activities at Camp
At Falcon Camp, the activities are plentiful and the fun is never ending! Whether you’re on the swim team at home or just love going to the pool every summer, our unique location on Leesville Lake allows you to take advantage of all that the water has to offer on a hot summer day.
Whenever H20 comes up in the rotation for your unit (learn more about this concept here), you can cool off in the lake and try your hand at a number of different water skills. Just imagine doing some of the following after a day of horseback riding and tennis!
- Swimming
- Sailing
- Canoeing
- Kayaking
- Fishing
- Paddleboarding
- Playing on water toys
Swimming
While at the waterfront, campers can choose to focus on swimming, where they progress in skills using the American Red Cross Swimming Levels. From beginners who aren’t comfortable in the water, to campers who are on their school swim team, our staff are trained to help swimmers of all abilities get to the next level.
Campers learn how to float and do various strokes: breaststroke, elementary backstroke, side stroke, front crawl, back crawl, and butterfly, and may even learn some water rescue skills.
Sailing
Sailing is another activity offered at the waterfront. Campers learn about the boats from the hulls up, including how to rig, important terms, points of sail, and more. For different awards, campers will complete sailing obstacle courses, build their own sailboats, handle sailing “emergencies”, and learn to sail different types of boats (we have sunfish, hunters and a catamaran).
Canoeing
Campers can choose to canoe during their waterfront period. Here, they will learn parts of the canoe, parts of the paddle, important terms, different types of strokes, and what to do in a canoeing “emergency”. Campers practice on land and in boats. They complete different courses with different challenges, such as canoeing alone, canoeing a long course, and canoeing while submerged.
Other Waterfront Activities
Waterfront is set up so that structured lessons take the first 45 minutes, and campers have free time for the remaining 45 minutes. They can continue working on awards in the same area as before, swim or boat for fun, or use some of our other available water items during this time. Other activities include fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or playing on water toys.
