Why Theater Classes for Kids Are So Valuable

February 28, 2023

Does your child love playing pretend or acting out their favorite movie? Are they super creative but too shy to share it? Do they enjoy collaborating with other kids on a project?

No matter your child’s personality or interests, they can benefit from theater classes for kids.

At Falcon Camp, we cultivate an environment where kids feel safe to explore a wide variety of summer camp activities, from archery to canoeing to woodslore. Along the way, they discover something about themselves. One of camp’s favorite activities, Drama, is crucial in helping them do just that.

How? Let’s explore the benefits of theater classes for kids.

Cultivating Communication Skills

Like all art forms, theater is about communication. It encourages kids to communicate with an audience, but the collaborative nature of theater also teaches them how to work together!

Acting is reacting, so during drama classes, kids learn how to listen to others and react accordingly. Theater also encourages children to express themselves—through singing, speaking and body language.

Onstage, children learn how to speak clearly and confidently. They will use this valuable public speaking experience for the rest of their lives!

Building Teamwork

The collaborative nature of theater encourages kids to work together. During summer camp theater sessions, kids cooperate to create something together, whether it is a full production or just a quick, improvised skit.

From acting together onstage to lending a hand backstage, teamwork is essential to every aspect of theater. Without it, nothing could get done!

Inspire Creativity

Theater classes give kids a chance to stretch their creative muscles, whether it’s by embodying a character, exploring the meaning behind written lines, or designing sets and costumes. Having a creative outlet for self-expression is invaluable for a child’s development and mental health.

Beyond encouraging children to lean into their artistic side, drama classes also incorporate improvisation games. Improv encourages children to think on their feet and adapt to any situation. When they say, “Yes, and…” onstage, they’re learning how to be flexible and problem solve in the real world.

Boosting Confidence

When kids create something and share it with others, their self esteem soars.

If your child is shy, drama classes help them come out of their shell. When they’re onstage, they don’t have to be themselves; they can become a character! Pretending to be a different person makes it easier to conquer insecurity.

If a child gets stage fright and has nerves leading up to the performance, the experience of overcoming it and going onstage anyway will give them a major confidence boost. Theater teaches them that they can overcome any challenge by taking a few deep breaths and believing in themselves.

Engaging Empathy

When a child is playing a character different from them, they exercise one of life’s most important skills: empathy.

Theater classes literally let your kid walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, making them a more compassionate person and a better role model for others.

Theater Classes for Kids at Falcon Camp

Falcon Camp’s theater program is part of the Drama/Athletics rotations. While these two activities may initially seem unrelated, sports and theater have a lot in common. They both involve working with a team and practicing skills, culminating in a presentation to an audience. When you think about it, a game isn’t too different from a play!

Our theater activities give kids a background in theater history, practices, and performance. While they’re rehearsing, they also learn theater terms like “stage left” and the six elements of drama: plot, character, thought, diction, spectacle, and song.

But at Drama, they don’t just learn–they do! At the end of every session, campers have an opportunity to perform for the entire camp. Some weeks it will be skits or performances they’ve made up. Other weeks they’ll take part in a full-length musical production after auditioning, learning dances, memorizing lines, and more!

Drama is just one of the dozens of summer camp activities that we offer at Falcon Camp, and is the best activity to bring out your child’s inner star. Our interdisciplinary approach and rotating schedule ensure that every camper explores something new. They might find a hidden talent, lifelong hobby, or even a future career.
